Eyelid Surgery: Everything you need to know

What is Eyelid Surgery?

As a person ages, eyelids are stretched due to the loosening of supporting muscles. For this reason, eyelid surgery has been introduced in cosmetology. Eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, is a surgical process that involves the reduction of excessive bagginess from the lower eyelid and excessive skin from the upper ones. Usually performed for cosmetic reasons, this is an effective way to improve the eyesight of older people as their sagging upper eyelids become a hindrance to their vision.

Why is Eyelid surgery required?

A lack of elasticity along with a constant pull of gravity leads to contraction of the upper and lower eyelids. The extra fold of skin on the upper eyelids can hang over the eyelashes to block a person’s sight. Wrinkles and bulges are also caused due to excessive skin on the lower eyelids. Hence, eyelid surgery is considered.

How is eyelid surgery performed?

After knowing your previous medical history, you will be given local anesthesia around the eye with the help of oral sedation. Next, doctors will cut the natural lines of the eyelids while separating the skin from underlying tissues. Finally, excessive fat is removed from the eyelids. The cut is then closed with the help of small stitches, which would stay for about 3 to 6 days. However, this will depend on the technique used, too.

Points to remember after undergoing Eyelid surgery

Once your surgery is successful, you might experience discomfort like blurred vision, watering eyes, sensitivity from light, double vision, puffy and numb eyelids, swelling or bruising from the lubricating ointment. For better results, the following precautions should be taken:
  • Once the surgery is completed, use eye packs in the night for 10 minutes, every hour. After that, use the mat least 4-5 times a day.
  • Clean your eyelids gently and apply prescribed ointments or eye drops. In case of swelling, you can use a cold compress.
  • Avoid arduous tasks like lifting heavyweight, swimming, aerobics, jogging, etc. for at least a week of surgery.
  • Do not rub your eyes.
  • Don’t put contact lenses, for at least two weeks of surgery.
  • Use sunglasses to protect your eyelids from the sun and dust.
  • While sleeping, keep your head raised from your chest.
  • Avoid intake of herbal and other supplements as they might induce bleeding.
